Genre Research: Stowaway

  • There was a lot of suspense in this film which I believe we should try to do the same in our movie. Using music, we could put watchers on the edge of their seats just like they did in Stowaway. There were also realistic and innovative props and settings that were used in this film. As well as the use of their costumes.  
  • Stowaway was highly Music oriented, and I would like to do this in our movie too. There were also great props because it was like they made the whole ship one big prop throughout the movie. There was also the fact that Stowaway only had 4 actors on screen the entire movie. I believe this contributed to the lonely feeling of the movie. They truly didn’t have help and were on their own up there. 
  • In the beginning of the movie during the ship launch, there was very shaky camera movement, and I don’t think that this could be useful to us. There won’t be any intense scenes with lots of movement in our film. One thing that I didn’t like was that there were very basic camera angles. I had a hard time seeing what they were trying to portray through them, and I want to make it easy for our audience, so they understand our movie.

What is your takeaway from the video?   This was a great video to watch right before my group and I start really planning our short film. Out of the many key points that I’ll remember, I think my main takeaway was about planning. In the video, the speaker starts off explaining why planning is so crucial. Planning ahead of filming is good because it sets a firm foundation for your short film. The speaker says that to write a good short film, you have to write what you can “pull-off”. This means that you have to plan and write in according to your budget and resources that are at your disposal. Comparing Le Jetée vs 12 Monkeys

From a video on YouTube, I learned about "twelve monkeys", and how it apparently is a short film version of "la Jetée".  The name of the video is "is 12 monkeys better than the original" where it goes through and explains the differences and how it changed. My own takeaway is that while short films can be derived from movies, they can be changed into its own creation despite having the same plot. It doesn't need to perfectly resemble the original movie; in fact, it can have its own take and be even better than the original. I learned that the movie cannot be reimagined through the help of writing and creative changes and added to the movie. Short films can be entertaining when written with the right amount of all elements and not just full of jokes. 9 the short film vs 9 the film

  Short film: My first impression of this short film was a bit strange. I felt like the post-apocalyptic earth with mechanical creatures and animals made the film have a strange sci-fi feel. However, the meaning behind the plot regarding humans and machines, or what makes people alike in certain ways was shown when the other eight rag dolls emerged from the dead. The lack of speech or diction in this film also aided towards the meaning behind his film in regards to what makes us all alike. It is also cool to learn and relate to a character without even hearing them talk. Conventions  used are an abundance of low and high angles, to show the antagonists power over 9, yet also eyeline shots are used to show emotion in such characters.
